The FAB&PP SpecialPoem of the Month for April 2001

a sweet white
dog
under a packing
             blanket
in the street

eyes still
            open

unmarked

the samaritan
who found her
the neighbor
who lent the
             blanket
marked the
spot

the boy came out
calling and
was met by
the calm of
death

he held it
cradled
in his arms
silent

his
    dog
his silence
his love

the neighbor
spoke the
                words
unheeded
the father shrugged

the blanket
taken in
    again
       the
empty
street
the memory

memorial
