The FAB&PP Poem of the Month for May 2004

listening to
the furnace late
at night

the rushing
energy
vibrating through
the ducts
and floor

the fan launches
the air
         enveloping
cold
       ankles
warm
backs alike

the throbbing
process steadies
and recedes
giving way [after
a time]
           with a soft
electro-mechanical
click in the
thermostat
  the burner
quits and the
oil
    (finally)
pump rests
the fan
continuing its
evacuation
for a while
then stopping
                      itself
with a sudden
lack
      of urgency

nothing left

but the moan
and groan of
thermodynamic
equilibrium
(settling)

and then
in the
silence of the
refrigerator cycle
the TIVO
hard drive
is the only
whisper left
of life
